Call for Proposals: Quantum Standardization and Testing Labs

The Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme, announced by the Department of Telecommunications on 01.10.2022, aims to support and encourage research and development in telecom products and technologies. This initiative is part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission and aligns with the Hon'ble Prime Minister’s call for ‘Jai Anushandhan’.

This call for proposal, "Quantum Standardization and Testing Labs," invites submissions from Indian academic institutions or R&D institutions, either individually or in partnership. The main aim is to accelerate research and development in quantum technologies, ensuring the interoperability, reliability, and security of quantum communication systems. These labs will serve as a hub for innovation and development in the Quantum field by uniting the efforts of Quantum technology developers, testing equipment manufacturers and academic researchers to explore and exploit the full potential of quantum technologies.

Objective of the proposed lab should be to provide facilities that can cater to:

  • 1. Quantum standardization: : Establish benchmarks and protocols essential for the seamless integration of quantum communication elements such as quantum key distribution, quantum state analyzers, optical fibers and components, spectrum analyzers etc. into existing and future communication networks.

  • 2. Testing facilities: Develop reliable testing facilities to validate quantum concepts/ processes, devices and applications such as SPDC (spontaneous parametric down conversion) process using ppKTP crystal, Beryllium crystal, quantum tunneling, quantum teleportation etc., created by Indian industry members including startups, R&D and Academia Institutions, verify their performance under various conditions, and certify their compliance with national and international standards.

  • These labs should aim to be available for use by industry, startups, and local telecom stakeholders at a nominal fee.

  • This comprehensive approach will support the growth of indigenous quantum technology solutions and bolster India's capabilities in emerging global markets for quantum communication, positioning India as a leader in global standards.

Some Exemplar technologies proposed in the lab

  • Single Photon and Entangled Photon Sources

  • Single Photon Detectors and Various Types such as superconducting nanowire SPDs and avalanche photodiodes

  • Quantum Memories and Repeaters

  • Quantum Communication Modules such as QKD, quantum teleportation, free space quantum communications

  • Trusted Nodes and Untrusted Nodes

  • Any other items/ vertical relevant to Quantum Communication Domain

  • This initiative is a step towards making India self-reliant in quantum technologies and setting global benchmarks in this cutting-edge field.

The last date for submission of proposals is Closed.
